The biology of these amphibians is defined by their extreme adaptation to subterranean life. They possess keratinous tubercles on their hind feet, which act like spades. This allows them to burrow deep into the soil to escape harsh environmental conditions, remaining dormant for extended periods in protected soil layers.

Their life cycle includes a significant aquatic stage for reproduction and larval development. Following the larval phase, the toads emerge to lead a terrestrial life. They are nocturnal predators that feed on various invertebrates, which serves as a biological control mechanism against many crop-damaging insects found in the upper soil layers.

The primary damage associated with Pelobatidae is mechanical. By digging burrows, they can inadvertently disturb the root systems of young seedlings or newly planted crops. While they do not consume plant tissue, the displacement of soil and the creation of tunnels can lead to air pockets around the roots, causing dehydration and potential plant stress.

Control measures should focus on exclusion rather than eradication, as these toads are beneficial entomophages.

  • Maintain firm, well-compacted soil paths to discourage burrowing.
