Systematically, they are classified under the family Myrmeleontidae. Their life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larval stage is particularly well-known for creating conical pits in sandy soil to trap prey, a unique behavior that showcases their specialized hunting strategy.
The biological development of an antlion can take several years, depending on environmental factors such as temperature and prey availability. Once the larval stage is complete, they undergo pupation within a silk cocoon disguised with sand. As adults, they are elusive and often nocturnal, resembling dragonflies but distinguishable by their clubbed antennae.
There is no evidence of damage to crops or horticultural plants caused by antlions. They do not consume leaves, stems, roots, or fruits. Their presence in an agricultural setting is entirely benign, and they do not require any form of pest control intervention. In fact, their hunting activities contribute to natural insect population regulation.
