Systematic position. Lophopodidae belongs to the phylum Bryozoa, class Phylactolaemata. These are colonial invertebrates that often colonize submerged surfaces. In agricultural or aquacultural settings, they are considered pests due to their ability to cover and smother aquatic plant species.

Crops and economic impact. The pests primarily damage aquatic plants in aquaculture and hydroponic systems. The colonies attach themselves to the stems and leaves, creating a thick gelatinous film that physically suppresses plant growth and interferes with nutrient uptake and photosynthesis.

Biology and life cycle. These organisms reproduce via budding, forming extensive colonies. A crucial aspect of their life cycle is the production of statoblasts—dormant, resistant bodies that can survive extreme conditions, including desiccation and cold, making the pest extremely difficult to eradicate completely from a closed water system.

Character of damage. Damage manifests as grayish or brownish gelatinous mats covering the plants. As the colonies expand, they cause significant mechanical stress, inhibit the light reception of the leaves, and eventually lead to chlorosis and decay of the affected parts of the plant due to lack of metabolic activity.

Control measures. Management is challenging due to the resilience of statoblasts. The most effective approach is a combination of mechanical removal and environmental management, such as filtering the water to remove organic matter and using UV sterilization. Chemical control is limited and must be used with caution to avoid impacting aquatic life.
