Systematic position. Gribbles (Limnoriidae) are a family of small marine crustaceans belonging to the order Isopoda. Unlike their terrestrial relatives, these organisms have evolved to exploit submerged timber as both a habitat and a primary food source, causing significant economic damage to maritime infrastructure.

Host structures. While they do not affect traditional crops, gribbles are destructive pests for wooden materials submerged in salt or brackish water. Their targets include wooden piers, jetties, mooring piles, harbor defenses, and the hulls of wooden boats, leading to structural failures in maritime engineering.

Biology and life cycle. Gribbles exhibit a unique life cycle characterized by the absence of a free-swimming larval stage. They live in dense colonies within excavated galleries. Females brood their young, which emerge as miniature adults capable of immediately beginning to bore into the wood adjacent to their parents, facilitating rapid expansion of the infested area.

Damage and economic impact. The infestation manifests as a network of small, interconnected tunnels. As the surface layer of wood becomes honeycombed by these tunnels, it is eroded by wave action and currents. This chronic destruction reduces the cross-sectional area of wooden pilings, eventually leading to structural weakness and the collapse of support systems.
