They show a strong preference for high-energy fruits, often consuming or destroying them just before harvest time, which causes significant economic loss for farmers.
The biology and reproductive cycle of lemurs are characterized by slow maturation and annual breeding. Despite their relatively low reproductive rate, their adaptability and opportunistic feeding habits allow them to thrive in human-modified landscapes. They often operate in family groups, making their visits to fields coordinated and highly efficient in terms of crop destruction.
Damage to plants is typically mechanical and destructive. In addition to direct consumption, lemurs often break branches, damage bark, and strip leaves, which significantly reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the trees and leaves them susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial diseases. Their feeding pattern is often sporadic but aggressive.
Crop protection strategies must be non-lethal, as many lemur species are protected by local and international laws. Effective measures include using deterrents such as motion-activated sprinklers, scarecrows, and acoustic devices that simulate predator calls. Additionally, fencing systems and crop netting are considered the most reliable methods for excluding these primates from sensitive agricultural areas.
