The Hydroptilidae family, commonly known as micro-caddisflies, are members of the order Trichoptera. As the smallest representatives of this order, their adults typically range from 2 to 5 millimeters in length. While ecologically significant in natural waterways, they can become problematic pests in managed aquatic agricultural systems and high-value plant nurseries.

Their life cycle consists of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larval stage is particularly noted for constructing portable cases that are extremely small. These larvae inhabit aquatic environments and feed on organic matter or plant tissues. The transition through these stages is temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations in warmer, controlled agricultural water systems.
The damage caused by micro-caddisflies is characterized by skeletonized leaves, irregular holes, and necrotic patches on submerged foliage. Heavy infestations can lead to stunted growth and reduced photosynthetic capacity in affected crops. Furthermore, the physical damage often promotes secondary infections, such as bacterial rot or fungal growth, exacerbating the overall impact on the plant health.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Hydroptilidae. Protective measures include regular monitoring of submerged plant surfaces, manual removal of infested debris, and proper water quality management.
