The family Dentaliidae belongs to the class Scaphopoda, commonly known as tusk shells. These are strictly marine organisms characterized by a tubular, tooth-like shell that is open at both ends. They are ecologically distinct as they reside in marine sediment, far removed from any agricultural environment or land-based farming systems.

It is a common misconception to categorize Dentaliidae as plant pests. In reality, these mollusks play no role in damaging agricultural crops. Their physiological requirements and environmental constraints prevent them from surviving in the terrestrial soils where vegetables, grains, and fruits are cultivated. They have no interaction with crop roots or foliage.

The biology of tusk shells involves a specialized feeding mechanism where they use their foot to burrow into the seafloor and collect microscopic prey like foraminifera. Their life cycle includes a planktonic larval stage followed by a sedentary benthic stage within marine habitats. They are entirely dependent on high-salinity oceanic environments.

Regarding their impact on agriculture, it is impossible for Dentaliidae to be considered pests. Any degradation of crops observed in an agricultural setting must be attributed to true terrestrial pests rather than these marine invertebrates. They do not feed on plant tissue, do not live in garden soil, and do not cause economic loss to farmers.

Consequently, there are no control measures or protection strategies required for Dentaliidae in an agronomic context. Growers experiencing crop damage should focus their diagnostic efforts on common soil-borne pests like larvae of click beetles or cutworms. Monitoring and chemical or biological controls are never intended for, nor effective against, tusk shells as they do not exist within the ecosystem of cultivated plants.
