While typically known as marine organisms, their status as pests arises in the context of controlled environment agriculture, specifically within aquaponic and hydroponic systems. When introduced into these closed environments, they can transition from neutral inhabitants to destructive agents affecting plant health and system efficiency.

These organisms pose a threat to various aquatic and semi-aquatic crops, particularly those where roots are exposed directly to the water column or nutrient-rich substrates. By feeding on root tips and young lateral roots, they disrupt the plant's nutrient uptake mechanism, leading to stunted growth, nutrient deficiency symptoms, and reduced vigor in commercial crop varieties.
The biology of Crangonidae involves distinct larval stages that are highly opportunistic. In a recirculating system, these larvae can easily migrate through filtration units if mesh sizes are inadequate. Once established, the adults are nocturnal feeders that thrive in the nutrient-dense conditions characteristic of hydroponics, making them difficult to detect until significant plant damage has already occurred.
The primary damage caused by these shrimp is both mechanical and physiological. Beyond direct tissue consumption, their burrowing behavior disturbs the root zone and dislodges anchoring media, exposing roots to pathogens. This environmental stress often triggers secondary infections by fungi such as Pythium or Fusarium, which can decimate an entire crop cycle if left unmanaged.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Crangonidae in agricultural facilities. This includes physical exclusion through fine-mesh filtration (micronic screens), regular monitoring of system intake, and the implementation of biological control agents where appropriate. Maintaining optimal water parameters and limiting organic debris accumulation can also create an unfavorable environment for their population growth.
