While often considered benign in nature, in managed agricultural systems such as hydroponics or aquaculture, these micro-crustaceans can become problematic pests that interfere with plant growth and infrastructure efficiency.

They mainly affect closed-loop systems, nurseries, and plant production units that utilize nutrient-rich water. By inhabiting the pipe networks and reservoirs, they can survive on organic debris and algae present within the nutrient solutions intended for crop irrigation.

The biology of Chydoridae is characterized by rapid asexual reproduction under favorable conditions. They exhibit a high level of resilience due to the formation of ephippia (resting eggs), which allow the population to survive extreme conditions, including drying out and exposure to some types of disinfectants, making them difficult to eradicate completely.

The damage caused by these organisms is primarily physical and secondary-biological. They clog irrigation emitters and filtration membranes, forcing downtime for cleaning. Their accumulation can also alter the oxygen levels in the water and promote the growth of decomposing bacteria that may lead to root rot or pathogen transmission in sensitive crops.

To effectively manage Chydoridae populations, producers should implement the following agricultural practices:

  • Implement strict filtration protocols using fine-mesh filters (less than 50 microns).
  • Use UV sterilization systems to neutralize crustacean larvae.
