In the agricultural sector, the primary issue is biofouling. Chthalamids aggressively colonize the interior surfaces of water intake pipes, pump impellers, and irrigation channels. This accumulation forms dense, hardened structures that severely restrict water flow and can cause significant operational downtime for agricultural irrigation systems.

The life cycle involves a planktonic larval stage where individuals drift through water systems, eventually settling on firm surfaces to undergo metamorphosis. Once they attach, they secrete a rigid, calcified shell that is highly resistant to environmental stress and chemical cleaning, making them persistent nuisances in man-made hydraulic structures.

The damage caused by these barnacles is primarily mechanical and structural. Beyond restricting flow, the presence of these organisms increases surface roughness, which disrupts hydraulic efficiency and accelerates the electrochemical corrosion of metallic piping. This results in increased energy consumption for pumps and the necessity for costly, frequent mechanical descaling.

Control measures focus on prevention and maintenance. Strategies include the application of antifouling coatings on submerged machinery, regular chlorination of water supplies to target larval stages, and the installation of fine mesh intake screens. Ultrasonic anti-fouling devices are also increasingly employed to prevent the initial attachment of juveniles to infrastructure.
