Barentsiids

Systematic position. Barentsiidae are a family within the phylum Entoprocta (Kamptozoa). These are colonial, sessile organisms that inhabit aquatic environments. While traditionally studied in marine biology, their presence in industrial agricultural systems, particularly in recirculating aquaculture or hydroponics, makes them a niche but significant concern for modern growers.

Barentsiids

Crops affected. These pests primarily impact crops grown in hydroponic and aquaponic setups. The target plants include various greenhouse vegetables and leafy greens whose root systems are directly exposed to recirculating nutrient solutions, which provide the substrate for these organisms to attach and proliferate.

Biology and life cycle. Barentsiids reproduce primarily through budding, allowing for rapid colonization of submerged surfaces such as pipes, tanks, and plant roots. Their life cycle thrives in environments with high levels of organic matter, which they filter from the water. Under controlled environmental conditions, their population can explode, forming dense mats on root structures.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The damage is primarily indirect but physically obstructive. By covering the roots, they restrict the uptake of oxygen and essential nutrients, leading to stunted growth, nutrient deficiency symptoms, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by pathogenic fungi or bacteria that thrive in the decaying organic matter within the colonies.

Control measures:

  • Implementation of rigorous water filtration systems to remove larvae and colonies.
  • Regular cleaning and disinfection of all pipes and reservoirs in hydroponic units.
  • UV-C sterilization of circulating nutrient solutions to prevent settlement.
  • Maintenance of low organic matter levels in the growth medium to limit food sources.
