These organisms can damage the root systems of plants cultivated in saline environments or coastal zones if the substrate is not properly sanitized. Their burrowing activity disrupts the structure of the root zone in young plants, leading to significant physiological stress, stunting, and reduced overall plant development.

The biology of lugworms is inherently tied to intertidal zones, where they construct U-shaped burrows to filter feed and process sediment. Their life cycle includes a planktonic larval stage that can infiltrate irrigation systems if water is sourced directly from coastal estuaries, lagoons, or sea-facing inlets without adequate pre-treatment.

The damage caused is primarily mechanical, as the worms disrupt the root-soil interface while tunneling, alongside biochemical alterations to the rhizosphere caused by their excretions. This environment often becomes conducive to the proliferation of secondary pathogens and root rot, which negatively impact the yield and survival of salt-tolerant crop varieties.

Mitigation strategies primarily focus on the physical decontamination of materials. It is essential to heat-treat or filter any sediments sourced from coastal areas before application. If irrigation involves saline water, multi-stage filtration systems must be installed to exclude worm larvae. Chemical control is generally avoided due to the sensitivity of the surrounding aquatic environments.
