Aoridae is a family of small crustaceans belonging to the order Amphipoda. While most members of this family are marine organisms, certain species have adapted to coastal zones or brackish waters, which can pose a specific risk to crops grown in areas with high water tables or river deltas.

The life cycle of Aoridae is characterized by direct development without metamorphosis. Females carry their eggs in a brood pouch (marsupium), from which fully formed juveniles emerge. Under optimal conditions, these populations can reproduce rapidly, leading to a significant increase in the number of individuals per unit area.
The pest primarily damages the root systems and the basal stem zone of vegetable crops and seedlings. Damage appears as localized tissue consumption, which facilitates the entry of pathogenic fungi and bacteria. This results in loss of turgor, stunted growth, and the eventual death of the affected plants.
