They also frequently damage maize, peanuts, pumpkins, and melons. In orchards, they are known to attack saplings by gnawing on the bark, which can kill young trees.
The biology of Hystricidae is marked by nocturnal activity and a burrowing lifestyle. They are industrious excavators, creating complex tunnel systems that serve as daytime shelters. While their reproductive rate is generally low, their longevity and ability to thrive in modified landscapes allow them to maintain persistent populations near farmlands.
The economic damage caused by these rodents is substantial. They are known for their destructive foraging behavior: they do not just consume crops but often destroy much more than they actually eat by digging up ground and trampling vegetation. The physical destruction of root systems often leads to the total loss of yield in the affected patches.
Protection measures against porcupines mainly involve the installation of effective fencing. A successful deterrent usually consists of a robust metal mesh wire buried at least 30-40 cm deep to prevent burrowing under the barrier. Other methods include using sonic repellents or active patrolling, but mechanical exclusion remains the most reliable strategy for protecting fields.
