Fungus moths
These pests primarily cause damage in storage facilities, silos, and warehouses where grains, seeds, and processed plant materials are kept. The larvae of Tineidae consume cereal grains, dried fruits, and various stored foodstuffs. By feeding on the embryos or endosperm of the seeds, they significantly reduce the viability of planting material and the market value of the harvested crop.
The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on food sources or in nearby crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae construct silken cases or tunnels, which serve as protection during feeding. Development is highly sensitive to environmental factors; higher temperatures and humidity levels significantly accelerate their reproductive rate.
Infestation is typically identified by the presence of characteristic silken webbing, larval casings, and frass (excrement) mixed with the damaged substrate. As Tineidae larvae feed, they often create conditions that favor the secondary growth of molds, which further compromises the quality and safety of the stored product, rendering it unfit for animal or human consumption.
Effective control measures require a combination of preventative and corrective strategies. Proper sanitation is critical; removing grain dust and debris prevents the establishment of the pest population. Maintaining dry storage conditions and using hermetic packaging are highly effective. For severe infestations, professional fumigation and the strategic use of pheromone traps are recommended to control adult populations and interrupt the breeding cycle.
