The most commonly studied member of this family is Schreckensteinia festaliella. This species is primarily known for feeding on various plants within the Rosaceae family. In agricultural environments, they are particularly noted for causing localized but noticeable damage to blackberry and raspberry plants, often clustering on the underside of foliage.

The biology of these moths follows a complete metamorphosis cycle. The adult moths are generally nocturnal or crepuscular, emerging in spring to lay eggs on host plants. The larvae, which are the destructive life stage, hatch and immediately begin feeding, moving between tissues and leaving characteristic skeletonized patterns on the leaves.

The economic impact of these pests is primarily tied to the reduction of photosynthetic efficiency. By destroying the leaf mesophyll, the larvae cause chlorosis, stunted growth of fruit-bearing canes, and, in severe cases, premature defoliation. While individual larvae cause minor damage, high density populations can significantly degrade the quality of berry yields.

Integrated pest management (IPM) for Schreckensteiniidae involves a combination of strategies. Producers should prioritize regular field scouting to detect early infestations. Maintaining clean rows by removing debris and weeds helps minimize overwintering sites. In severe outbreaks, the application of targeted biological insecticides or systemic chemicals may be necessary, provided that harvest intervals are strictly observed.
