How to identify
The Grape rootworm (Fidia viticida) is a beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae. The adult beetle is roughly 6–7 mm long, covered in dense, grayish-brown hairs, giving it a somewhat fuzzy, earthen appearance.
The larvae are white, C-shaped grubs with brown heads, reaching about 10 mm in length. They are primarily soil-dwelling, feeding on the root systems of grapevines throughout the growing season.
The life cycle consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Larvae overwinter deep in the soil, moving upward as temperatures rise in the spring to feed on grape roots before pupating in earthen cells.
Adults emerge from the soil in late spring and early summer. They are active mostly during the day, feeding on the foliage of vines. Mating occurs shortly after emergence, followed by egg-laying in crevices of the grapevine bark.
This pest is highly dependent on soil temperature and moisture conditions for its larval development, making its population density fluctuate significantly from year to year depending on weather patterns.
What it damages
As the name suggests, the Grape rootworm is a specialized pest of grapes. The damage is twofold: the larvae feed on the roots, while the adults consume the leaves, causing severe stress to the plant.
Larval feeding destroys fine root hairs and consumes the bark of larger roots. This disrupts the plant's ability to take up water and nutrients, leading to reduced vigor and poor growth of the vines.
Adults feed by chewing chain-like holes in the leaves. When infestations are heavy, this feeding pattern can result in extensive loss of foliage, which diminishes the photosynthetic capability of the plant.
In severe cases, the cumulative damage leads to stunted growth, reduced fruit yield, and decreased sugar content in the grapes. Prolonged infestation can eventually cause the death of the vineyard block.
Economic damage is often cumulative, meaning that over several years, the vitality of the vineyard declines until it is no longer profitable for the producer, necessitating costly replanting efforts.
Signs of infestation
The most distinctive visual symptom of adult feeding is the presence of small, elongated, chain-like holes in the leaf blades, often described as a series of holes in a row.
Severe adult feeding can cause leaves to look tattered or skeletonized. This is most visible shortly after the adults emerge in early summer when the foliage is still relatively tender.
Symptoms of root damage include a decline in vine health that mimics nutrient deficiencies or drought stress. Leaves may turn yellow prematurely, and shoots may exhibit poor elongation.
During the day, adults can be found on the leaves, although they are quick to drop to the ground when disturbed, making them difficult to spot without careful observation.

It is essential to select products that minimize impact on beneficial insects, especially if treatments are near the flowering stage. Always follow local agricultural guidelines and safety intervals.
Biocontrol agents, such as entomopathogenic nematodes (e.g., Heterorhabditis species), have proven effective at targeting the larval stage in the soil, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional pesticides.
Monitoring using visual inspection of leaves and yellow sticky traps helps growers make informed decisions, ensuring that interventions are only applied when populations reach economic threshold levels.
