The sainfoin seed chalcid is a small insect belonging to the family Eurytomidae within the order Hymenoptera. Adult specimens are typically black, shiny, and measure about 2-3 mm in length.

The species is highly specialized, meaning its life cycle is almost entirely dependent on the host plant, the sainfoin. The female possesses an ovipositor used to penetrate developing pods.

Adult chalcids are most active during warm weather. They have a characteristic body shape with a robust thorax and a distinctively shaped abdomen, which distinguishes them from other parasitic wasps.

The larvae are legless, white, and inhabit the interior of the sainfoin seeds. Their physiological development is tightly synchronized with the maturation of the seed pods.

Since the entire larval stage is spent hidden inside the seed, these insects are difficult to detect, making them persistent pests in seed-producing regions.

When it appears

Once temperatures rise in the following spring, the larvae pupate inside the seed, eventually emerging as adults to start the cycle again.

Signs of infestation

The most common sign of infestation is the presence of small, perfectly circular exit holes on the pods of the sainfoin, left behind by emerging adults.

Inspecting seeds by dissection reveals hollow cavities filled with larval waste or the larvae themselves. This is the standard method for determining the level of infection in a seed batch.

Field observers may spot adults flying low over the canopy of the sainfoin during sunny days in the early flowering stage, which serves as a warning of potential infestation.

A reduction in the weight of the seed batch is another indicator. Heavily infested seeds are noticeably lighter and often fail to sink in water, which can be used as a simple test.

Laboratory testing of seed samples is essential to detect the pest before sowing, as visual inspection alone might miss low-level infections.

Control measures
