Clover leaf midge

The clover leaf midge (Dasineura trifolii) is a small insect belonging to the Cecidomyiidae family, order Diptera. The adult midge is typically less than 2 mm long with a delicate appearance.

The larvae are small, legless, and white or yellowish. They remain hidden within the leaves of the host plant throughout their developmental stages, making them difficult to spot without close inspection.

The midge exclusively targets clover species, such as red clover and white clover. It is considered a specialized pest that causes damage primarily to the foliage of the plant.

While the economic impact is often localized, heavy infestations in clover fields can significantly reduce the amount of forage produced, affecting both hay quality and grazing capacity.

Adult midges emerge in the spring when clover begins active growth. Mating occurs shortly after emergence, and females begin laying eggs inside the folded leaflets.

The species usually completes several generations per growing season. Development is highly dependent on humidity and temperature, with peak activity observed during warm, moist weather.

The primary symptom is the formation of galls, where the leaves become swollen and folded. These structures protect the larvae as they feed on the internal tissues of the leaflets.

As the larvae develop, the galls may turn yellow or brown. If the infestation is severe, the affected leaves wither and die, leading to stunted plant growth and overall yield loss.

Cultural control practices are the most effective way to manage the clover leaf midge. Rotating crops and maintaining spatial isolation between old and new clover fields is highly recommended.

Regularly mowing the clover stands can effectively remove the habitat of the larvae, preventing them from completing their life cycle and reducing the population for the next season.
