The Lucerne flower midge (Dasineura lupulini) is a minute dipteran insect belonging to the Cecidomyiidae family. Due to their extremely small size, adult midges are rarely observed by farmers in the field without using specific collection tools.

Adult midges possess delicate bodies with long, slender antennae and wings covered in microscopic hairs. Their coloration is typically cryptic, often resembling the various shades of the host plant, which helps them avoid detection.

The larvae are legless, elongate, and often whitish or pale pink in color. They are specialized for life within the confined spaces of plant reproductive organs, where they cause the most significant damage.

The biological cycle of the midge is highly synchronized with the phenology of alfalfa. Multiple generations can occur within a single growing season, depending on local temperature and humidity conditions.
