The flax midge (Dasineura lini) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae, known specifically for its impact on flax (Linum usitatissimum) crops.
Adult midges are extremely small, measuring about 1.5–2 mm in length, with delicate bodies and transparent wings, making them difficult to detect in the field.
The larvae, which are the damaging stage, are spindle-shaped and range in color from white to orange, allowing them to blend into the flower bud tissues.
The life cycle is closely linked to the phenology of flax, with the insect overwintering as a puparium within the soil at depths of 5 to 10 centimeters.
Emergence occurs during the budding phase of flax, when females deposit their eggs directly into the developing flower buds of the host plant.
What it damages
The primary damage is caused by larvae feeding on the reproductive parts of the flax plant, specifically the anthers and ovaries within the bud.
