How to identify
The clover seed midge, known scientifically as Dasineura gentneri, is a minute fly belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. Adult midges are very small, often measuring less than 2 mm in length.
The larvae are small, legless, and typically yellowish-white, dwelling inside the developing flower buds of host plants. Their identification requires specialized entomological equipment.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The insect spends the winter as a mature larva in the soil, encased in a protective cocoon.
Emergence occurs in the spring when temperatures rise, coinciding with the initiation of clover growth and the early development of flower heads.
Due to their size and cryptic behavior, populations are often overlooked until significant damage to the floral structures becomes visible.
What it damages
This pest is a major threat specifically to clover (Trifolium spp.) seed production. It is highly host-specific, targeting the reproductive parts of the plant.
Larvae consume the developing ovules and internal tissues of the flower buds. This destruction prevents the buds from opening and developing into flowers.
Infested flower heads are severely stunted and deformed. Because the larvae destroy the potential seeds, the economic loss for seed farmers is often very high.
Heavy infestations can lead to total loss of seed yield in certain areas of the field, rendering the crop commercially non-viable for seed production.
Weakened plants are also more susceptible to secondary stressors, further reducing the overall health and uniformity of the clover stand.
When it appears
Adult emergence typically begins during the bud development stage of the clover. This is the period when they are most actively laying eggs.
The larvae develop rapidly within the buds, feeding throughout their growth phase. The generation time can be as short as a few weeks, depending on weather conditions.
Several generations can occur throughout the growing season, allowing the population to increase significantly if conditions remain favorable.
The life cycle is closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant, specifically focusing on the floral development timeline.
By late summer or autumn, the final generation of larvae moves into the soil to enter diapause and await the return of favorable spring conditions.
Signs of infestation
The primary symptom is the failure of flower buds to open. The buds appear swollen, puffy, or otherwise misshapen compared to healthy ones.
When examined closely, the inside of these buds contains one or more larvae. The tissues inside may show signs of decay or browning caused by larval feeding.
The absence of blooming in portions of the field where the clover should be in full flower is a strong indicator of midge presence.
Premature shriveling and dropping of the flower heads are also common, reflecting the destruction of the reproductive organs inside.
In cases of high infestation, the field may exhibit a lack of seed set, which is only noticed during the harvest period if regular scouting was neglected.
Control measures
The most effective cultural control is harvesting the clover for forage or green manure before the larvae complete their development and leave the flower heads.
Maintaining proper distance between new clover plantings and old, infested stands helps minimize the colonization of the new crop.
Deep plowing following the harvest helps bury the overwintering larvae, reducing the population pressure for the subsequent growing season.
Insecticide applications are difficult due to the need to protect pollinating insects that are essential for successful clover seed production.
