The Cordyline gall midge (Dasineura cordylineae) is a minute insect belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is an specialist pest that targets Cordyline species, particularly in nursery and garden settings.
Adult midges are extremely small, often measuring only 2–3 mm in length. Due to their size and delicate appearance, they are frequently overlooked until damage becomes apparent.
The larvae are the destructive stage of the life cycle. They are legless, whitish or yellowish in color, and are specialized to live inside the plant tissue, creating protective structures known as galls.
The taxonomic classification of this species highlights its evolutionary adaptation to the specific chemistry of Cordyline plants, which allows it to manipulate the plant's growth processes.
These midges reproduce rapidly in sheltered environments such as greenhouses, where consistent temperatures provide a year-round breeding ground.
What it damages
The primary damage is caused by the larvae feeding within the young shoot tips. By injecting specific secretions, they interfere with the normal development of the plant tissue.
This interference results in the formation of galls, which are distorted, swollen structures that redirect the plant's resources to sustain the insect population.

Quarantine and visual inspection of all incoming nursery stock are essential to prevent the introduction of this pest into clean collections.
