How to identify

The meadow foxtail gall midge (Dasineura alopecuri) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a tiny insect, usually measuring 2-3 mm in length, with a delicate structure.

The adult midge is inconspicuous, making it very difficult to spot in the field. The primary diagnostic sign is the presence of larvae inside the spikelets of the grass.

Its life cycle is closely linked to the phenological stages of the host plant. Adults have a very short lifespan, focused almost entirely on mating and laying eggs.
