How to identify

The cypress leaf miner (Cupressatia siskiyou) is a small moth belonging to the Yponomeutidae family. The adult moths are characterized by narrow, mottled wings with a span of about 10–12 mm.

Adults are primarily nocturnal and are rarely seen during the day. They have a cryptic coloration that allows them to blend in perfectly with the bark of coniferous trees.

The larvae are small, yellowish-green caterpillars that feed inside the foliage. Their development stages are highly dependent on the host tree's physiology and ambient temperatures.

This species is a specialized pest that targets specific genera within the Cupressaceae family, making identification easier based on the host plant species.

Pupation occurs in white, spindle-shaped cocoons tucked into the base of needles or crevices of twigs, where the insect remains until the final stage of its transformation.

What it damages

The main hosts for Cupressatia siskiyou include various species of cypress, arborvitae (thuja), juniper, and false cypress, which are common in residential and commercial landscapes.

The caterpillars act as leaf miners, tunneling into the soft inner tissues of the needles. This feeding habit kills the needle from within, leaving a hollow, fragile shell.

Severe infestations cause significant dieback of the branch tips, leading to a scorched or rusty appearance throughout the canopy of the infested tree.

In addition to cosmetic damage, the pest weakens the tree's overall vigor, making it susceptible to secondary infections by fungal pathogens and environmental stress.

Large-scale outbreaks can cause widespread defoliation, particularly in nurseries where young, sensitive plants may suffer permanent damage or mortality.

When it appears

Larval activity resumes in early spring as soon as the temperatures rise enough to initiate metabolic processes, marking the start of the primary damage season.

Adult moths typically emerge in late spring or early summer to mate. This is the period when females lay eggs on the newly developing foliage of the host trees.

Summer months see overlapping generations, with rapid larval development that continues to damage the plant throughout the warmest part of the year.

As autumn approaches, the late-instar larvae prepare for overwintering, often remaining inside the mined needles or hiding in protected crevices on the bark.

Regular monitoring using pheromone traps or sticky traps is essential from late spring until late summer to determine the optimal timing for protective interventions.

Signs of infestation

The most visible symptom is the yellowing or browning of needle tips, which eventually turns into a dull grayish-brown color as the tissues die off.

Careful inspection will reveal tiny entry holes on the needles where the larvae have bored into the leaf tissue to begin their feeding process.

The presence of fine, sparse silk webbing between twigs can sometimes indicate a population buildup, although it is often less dense than with other web-spinning insects.

In heavily infested trees, shaking the branches often leads to the premature shedding of the damaged, hollowed needles, resulting in a thin, sparse crown.

Biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, can be effective if applied during the period when young larvae are exposed before entering the needles.

Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization helps the tree recover from stress and resist minor levels of infestation.

Strategic timing of insecticide sprays, coinciding with the peak of moth flight or egg hatching, is critical to achieving successful control and preventing further damage.
