Thor's scaldfish

Thor's scaldfish (Arnoglossus thori) is a marine fish belonging to the family Bothidae, commonly known as lefteye flounders. It is well-adapted to life on the sandy and muddy sea floors, displaying the characteristic flat, asymmetrical body of the Pleuronectiformes order.

These fish are relatively small, typically reaching a maximum length of about 20 centimeters. Like all members of their family, both eyes are situated on the left side of the head, allowing the fish to lie flat on the bottom while keeping a view of the water column.

The scales of Arnoglossus thori are ctenoid and cycloid, small in size, and easily detached. Its coloration varies from light tan to greyish-brown, effectively camouflaging it against the marine substrates it inhabits.

The lateral line is a key diagnostic feature, exhibiting a distinct curve above the pectoral fin. This morphological trait is frequently used by researchers to distinguish the species from other flatfish in the Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic.

This species is of no agricultural significance and does not act as a pest to terrestrial plants; it is exclusively a marine organism that feeds on small crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates.
