The pest Agonia spathoglossis belongs to the family Chrysomelidae (leaf beetles), subfamily Hispinae. This small insect in its adult phase has a flattened body shape that allows it to hide in the tight leaf axils of orchids.
The larvae lead a cryptic lifestyle, developing inside the plant tissues. Adults possess protective coloration that helps them blend in with the leaf surface, making visual detection difficult in the early stages of infestation.
The pest can be identified by the specific patterns of damage it inflicts during feeding. When inspecting a collection, attention should be paid to hidden areas where insects prefer to reside during daylight hours.
The biological cycle includes the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The insect's development depends directly on the temperature regime in the greenhouse or the room where tropical plants are kept.
Precise identification often requires a magnifying glass, as the insect can mimic the shape or appearance of debris, remaining motionless when threatened.
What it damages
The primary food source includes members of the Orchidaceae family, specifically the genus Spathoglottis. The pest can infest both indoor and greenhouse varieties of ornamental plants.
The insect damages the leaf blade by creating tunnels or surface patches of tissue. This leads not only to a loss of aesthetic appeal but also disrupts the photosynthesis process of the plant.
The larvae pose a particular threat as they create mining tunnels inside the leaf. Such damage weakens the overall health of the orchid, making it susceptible to subsequent fungal and bacterial infections.
In cases of mass reproduction, the pest is capable of destroying a significant portion of the foliage, leading to stunted growth and failure to bloom. Damaged areas often become entry points for pathogens.
Severe damage is inflicted upon young shoots and flower stalks, which are the most succulent parts of the plant. Damage to flower stalks often results in deformation or premature bud drop.
Signs of infestation
The first sign of infestation is the appearance of light spots or characteristic narrow lines («mines») on the orchid leaf surface. These trails indicate that larvae are feeding on internal tissues.
In areas where insects congregate, yellowing and gradual necrosis of the leaf blade can be observed. The plant begins to show stunted development, losing turgor, and leaves may become deformed.
Inspection of the leaf's underside may reveal small excrement deposits, appearing as tiny dark dots or dashes. This is a typical indicator of leaf beetle larval activity.
Adult beetles leave small holes or «windows» on the leaves by consuming one layer of tissue while leaving the opposite cuticle intact. In severe cases, the leaf acquires a lacy appearance.
The presence of these insects is often accompanied by general wilting of the plant despite regular watering and proper agricultural conditions, as conductive tissues are compromised.
Control measures
The primary control measure is the mechanical removal of infested plant parts upon the first signs of infestation. Regularly inspecting the collection, especially new specimens from nurseries, is crucial.
Using systemic insecticides that penetrate plant tissues is an effective management method. Treatment requires ensuring uniform coverage of the entire leaf surface, including the undersides and axils.
Preparations containing imidacloprid or abamectin demonstrate high efficacy against mining pests. A second application is recommended after 7–10 days to target larvae emerging from eggs.
Quarantine measures play a vital role; all newly acquired plants should be kept in isolation for at least 3–4 weeks before being integrated into the main collection.
