When it comes to protecting fodder beet, the main challenge is removing weeds without stressing the crop itself. VextaMitron 700 SC from the Italian company VextaChem S.r.l. has become our go-to tool for managing broad-leaved weeds at early growth stages. Based on metamitron, this systemic herbicide penetrates through the leaves, providing results where contact-only products might fail due to weather volatility.

Application and Effectiveness

• Selective action: VextaMitron effectively targets problematic weeds such as common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, shepherd's purse, and common chickweed. Its high selectivity allows for safe application over crops without risking phytotoxicity when protocols are followed.
• Ease of preparation: The suspension concentrate form mixes easily and does not clog nozzles during spraying. We typically schedule applications for the post-emergence stage, targeting weeds in their most vulnerable phase (from cotyledons to the 2-leaf stage).
• Systemic control: Unlike many alternatives, its systemic nature ensures longer-lasting weed control. With the correct dosage adjusted for weed pressure and crop development, repeat treatments are significantly reduced.

Operational considerations

As a Class 2 hazard substance, strict adherence to safety protocols is mandatory during the preparation of tank mixes. Despite its selectivity, weather conditions remain critical: the best results are achieved in calm weather with temperatures between +12°C and +25°C. Keep in mind that soil moisture levels directly impact effectiveness, as it helps the active ingredient distribute properly. We also find the product highly compatible with other herbicides, allowing for full-spectrum weed control in a single pass.
