Humic acids

Description

Mode of action

Humic acids are a complex mixture of high-molecular-weight organic compounds formed during the humification of plant and animal residues. In agronomy, they act as potent biostimulants that activate metabolic pathways within the plant organism.

These compounds improve the physical and chemical properties of soil by increasing its water-holding capacity and promoting stable soil aggregate formation. Once in the soil solution, they become available to plants, facilitating the transport of nutrients across cell membranes.

Humic acids function as natural chelating agents, binding micronutrients into plant-available forms. This mechanism prevents nutrients from being locked within the soil matrix, ensuring consistent and long-term mineral nutrition for crops.

The biological effect is observed in enhanced root system development, allowing plants to explore a larger soil volume. Increased photosynthetic activity in leaves directly contributes to higher biomass accumulation and improved crop yields.

Regular use of humic acids enhances plant immunity. Crops become more resilient to abiotic stresses, such as drought, extreme temperature fluctuations, and soil salinity, ensuring stable productivity under adverse conditions.

What it targets

The application of humic acids is designed to mitigate the negative effects of environmental stress factors. They are highly effective in overcoming the "pesticide shock," helping crops recover quickly following herbicide applications.

Humic substances act against toxic compounds present in the soil. Due to their high adsorption capacity, they bind heavy metals and residual pesticides, preventing them from being absorbed by the plant's root system.

Fertilizers based on humic acids are used to address low soil fertility. They replenish organic matter levels and stimulate beneficial soil microflora, which can outcompete pathogenic microorganisms in the root zone.

These products are utilized to manage mineral nutrition imbalances. They optimize the uptake of macro- and micronutrients, correcting hidden deficiencies in vegetable, cereal, and fruit crops during critical growth stages.

Humic acids are effective against poor seed germination. Seed treatment increases germination energy and emergence uniformity, ensuring a dense and healthy stand from the very beginning of the growing season.

Rates and timing

Application rates for humic acids vary significantly depending on the formulation and the method of delivery. For seed treatment, aqueous solutions with concentrations ranging from 0.01% to 0.1% active ingredient are typically used.

Root zone application via fertigation systems generally requires rates of 2 to 5 liters (or kilograms) of active substance per hectare. The timing depends on the crop growth stage, usually applied during periods of intense vegetative growth.

Foliar application is carried out during critical development phases, such as tillering, budding, or fruit set. A standard rate is 0.5 to 1.5 liters per hectare, applied as part of tank mixes with other micronutrient fertilizers.

To improve soil quality when applied to open fields, rates may reach 10–20 kg per hectare during primary tillage. This contributes to the restoration of the humus balance over an extended period.

  • Seed treatment: 0.5–1.0 L/ton of seeds.
  • Fertigation: 2–5 L/ha throughout the growing season.
  • Foliar spray: 1.0–1.5 L/ha, 2–3 times per season.

Restrictions

A primary limitation is compatibility with hard water and acidic pesticide formulations. Humic acids may precipitate when mixed with products having a low pH, which significantly reduces their agronomic effectiveness.

It is not recommended to exceed the manufacturer's suggested dosages, as an excess of humates may inhibit plant growth due to excessive stimulation that leads to the depletion of energy reserves in seeds or rootstocks.

The effectiveness of humic acids may decrease in soils with extreme pH levels. In highly acidic or highly alkaline soils, their bioactivity is significantly lowered, requiring prior adjustment of the soil reaction.

It must be noted that humic acids are not a substitute for mineral fertilizers. They function as regulators and activators but cannot provide nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium in the quantities required for high-yield crop formation.

Long-term storage of ready-to-use humic acid solutions requires strict temperature control and protection from direct sunlight. Improper storage conditions lead to the microbiological degradation of components and the loss of product properties.
