Fairtrade Month Launches on a Historic High: Canadian Sales Generate $10 Million for Farmers Worldwide
For the first time ever, the Fairtrade Premium generated by Canadian sales of Fairtrade certified goods has surpassed USD 10 million. The announcement coincides with the launch of Fairtrade Canada’s annual Fairtrade Month campaign, inviting consumers across the country to participate by choosing certified products throughout October. The milestone reflects the collective purchasing power of Canadian shoppers whose everyday choices directly support vulnerable agricultural communities globally.
The Fairtrade Premium is an additional sum paid on top of the selling price directly to farmer and worker cooperatives. This financial support enables communities to invest in vital projects, ranging from clean water access and the construction of schools and hospitals to critical climate adaptation initiatives designed to protect agricultural yields against environmental challenges.
Julie Francoeur, CEO of Fairtrade Canada, emphasized the significance of the achievement. As Canadians increasingly reflect on the origins of their goods and the realities of fair global trade, this year's $10 million milestone demonstrates the tangible impact and potential of conscious consumer decisions and collective purchasing power.
Throughout October, various stakeholders across Canada—including domestic brands, workplaces, academic campuses, schools, towns, and major retailers—will engage in Fairtrade Month activities. These events are designed to highlight the stories of the hardworking people behind the production of everyday certified goods and to encourage broader participation in the movement.
The historic financial milestone underscores a growing consumer awareness and commitment to ethical sourcing and sustainable trade practices within the Canadian market, setting a strong precedent for future campaigns and continued support for international farming cooperatives.
