Indonesia to export 1,000 tons of premium rice to Malaysia

Indonesia has officially announced plans to export 1,000 metric tons of premium rice to Malaysia. The shipment, coordinated by the state-run logistics company Bulog, serves as a major milestone marking the country’s 81st Independence Day anniversary, showcasing the nation's improved food security and robust agricultural production.

The trade agreement was formalized on Friday, August 14, 2026, in Jakarta, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Bulog and Malaysia's Padi dan Beras Borneo Sdn. Bhd. The ceremony was attended by the Indonesian Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman. Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani described the deal as an anniversary gift for the nation, attributing the achievement to the collective hard work of farmers and effective government management.

According to official reports, national rice reserves currently stand at approximately 5.2 million metric tons. With such significant stocks available, the government has transitioned toward a policy that includes international trade. The initial shipment of 1,000 tons is intended to establish the partnership, with long-term projections suggesting that annual export volumes could gradually increase to 200,000 tons.

Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman emphasized that these exports would not jeopardize domestic supply. He stated that the move is a testament to Indonesia’s growing confidence and industrial strength. By maintaining a surplus, the country is able to engage in international trade while ensuring that its own domestic market remains stable and adequately supplied.

Bulog’s management reiterated that national food security remains the company’s highest priority. Nevertheless, capitalizing on high production trends is considered essential to seize global export opportunities. The company plans to continue strengthening its collaboration with both domestic and international partners to improve farmers' welfare and further expand the footprint of Indonesian agricultural products in the global marketplace.
