The growing threat posed by a so-called “super El Niño” to global food supplies is spurring the creation of a new commodities fund. Moreton Capital Partners is targeting $500 million for a special-purpose vehicle designed to trade multiple agricultural commodities that are expected to be severely impacted by the erratic weather patterns associated with this climate phenomenon.

The fund’s strategy focuses on key markets that are highly susceptible to weather-related production drops, including South African corn, Malaysian palm oil, and Australian wheat. According to Les Finemore, co-founder of Moreton Capital Partners, current market participants are failing to properly price these risks. Finemore noted in an interview that the market is seriously mispricing the impact of what he describes as a dramatic reshaping of the global food situation.

El Niño, which has been confirmed by scientists, involves the warming of the Pacific Ocean, leading to significant disruptions in global weather patterns. Such events have historically damaged crop yields globally. Forecasts suggest this current cycle could be one of the strongest on record, creating an urgent need for risk management in the agricultural sector as global food supplies become increasingly volatile.

The impact is already beginning to manifest in agricultural markets. For example, India, the world's top rice exporter, has been dealing with a delayed start to the monsoon season. The World Bank has issued warnings that El Niño could drive food prices well above current expectations, further exacerbating pressures on farmers who are already struggling with increased costs and global geopolitical conflicts.

By pooling $500 million in capital, Moreton Capital Partners aims to provide a mechanism for investors to hedge against or profit from the resulting market imbalances. As the agricultural community faces the climate-induced uncertainty of the coming seasons, the fund seeks to navigate the expected volatility, providing a sophisticated approach to managing the risks inherent in a rapidly changing global climate landscape.
