Allamanda begomovirus

The viral particles exhibit the characteristic twin-like morphology typical of the Begomovirus genus. Upon infection, the virus utilizes the host plant's internal cellular machinery to replicate its genetic material.

The primary vector for this pathogen is the tobacco whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. This virus follows a persistent transmission model, meaning the insect remains a carrier for a prolonged period after feeding on an infected plant.

Transmission typically occurs when whiteflies feed on the foliage or young shoots of the Allamanda. The virus enters the phloem, the plant's vascular tissue, allowing it to spread systematically throughout the entire organism.

Artificial transmission can also occur through propagation processes, such as grafting or taking cuttings from an already infected mother plant, making the use of healthy starting material critical.

The primary symptom of infection is the development of a distinct chlorotic mosaic pattern on the leaves. The foliage displays a variegated appearance with intermingled patches of light green, yellow, and normal tissue.

Significant deformation of leaf blades is frequently observed, where leaves become curled, crinkled, or significantly reduced in size (microphylly) compared to healthy, robust plants.
