Symptoms

The first and most characteristic symptom of the disease is chlorotic discoloration of the tissues directly along the leaf veins. The veins become pale yellow or almost transparent, contrasting sharply with the dark green leaf blade.

As the disease progresses, deformation of young leaves is observed; they often become wrinkled and develop an asymmetrical shape. In severe cases, there is general stunting of the entire plant's growth.

In certain species, such as scented-leaf geraniums, symptoms may appear as a distinct net-like pattern. On passionflowers, affected areas sometimes become necrotic, leading to premature leaf drop.

Unlike micronutrient deficiencies, viral vein clearing is rarely symmetrical. The infection often starts on one or several stems, gradually spreading throughout the entire bush.

To ensure an accurate diagnosis, it is essential to distinguish the viral nature from the aftermath of sap-sucking pest attacks. The presence of the virus is confirmed by laboratory testing, as visual signs can vary depending on the cultivar.

Pathogen

The causative agent of the disease is the Pelargonium vein clearing virus (PVCV), which belongs to the family of double-stranded DNA viruses.

This virus is systemic, meaning it penetrates all plant tissues, including the root system and flower stalks. This makes control efforts difficult, as it is virtually impossible to clear an infected specimen of the virus.

In natural conditions, the vector of the infection is most often aphids, but other sap-sucking insects such as whiteflies also play a significant role. The virus is transmitted when these insects feed on an infected plant.

Vegetative propagation plays a significant role in the spread of the virus. Using cuttings from infected mother plants guarantees the emergence of diseased young plants in the following season.

Conditions for development

Stress factors for the plant, such as fluctuations in substrate moisture or light deficiency, weaken the immune system of the geranium. On weakened plants, viral symptoms appear much more clearly and quickly.

Prolonged use of the same mother plants without virus-testing leads to the accumulation of the infection. Over time, the virulence of the virus may increase, leading to the loss of the entire collection.

The virus leads to a significant reduction in growth rates. The plant diverts resources to fight the infection, which results in a decrease in the number of buds formed and the duration of their flowering.

A serious threat is the longevity of the virus within tissues. An infected plant becomes a constant source of infection for the entire collection, threatening healthy geranium and passionflower species.

Infected plants often become more susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial infections. Combined damage leads to the rapid death of the most sensitive cultivars.

Pest control is a mandatory stage of prevention. It is necessary to carry out regular treatments with insecticides against aphids and whiteflies, using systemic action products.

For propagation, only healthy, virus-free material obtained from reputable suppliers should be used. It is recommended to practice meristem propagation methods for the sanitation of valuable cultivars.

Thorough disinfection of tools after each use is essential. Sterilizing pruners, knives, and work surfaces with alcohol solutions or special antiseptics prevents the transmission of the virus.

Regular monitoring of plant health allows for early detection of the disease. Timely removal of primary infection foci helps to stop the spread of the virus throughout the greenhouse or garden.
