Xyridaceae is a family of monocotyledonous flowering plants belonging to the order Poales. The most widely recognized genus within this family is Xyris, often referred to as "yellow-eyed grass." These plants are typically herbaceous, either annuals or perennials, which bear a superficial resemblance to grasses or sedges, but are distinguished by their complex, compact, head-like inflorescences carried on tall scapes.

In an agricultural or horticultural context, they are rarely grown as field crops, remaining primarily specialized specimens for botanical gardens and moisture-controlled greenhouses.

From a botanical standpoint, Xyridaceae species feature narrow, linear, grass-like leaves arranged in a basal rosette. The flowers are generally brilliant yellow, though some species may display white or blue hues, and are notable for their ephemeral nature, typically lasting only a single day. A defining morphological feature is the presence of hard, imbricated bracts that shield the inflorescence, giving the flower head a rigid and distinct appearance.

Cultivation requirements for Xyridaceae are demanding, necessitating a consistently waterlogged, acidic soil medium to replicate their native wetland conditions. They require high levels of solar irradiance for successful flowering and are highly sensitive to drought; even brief periods of desiccation can be fatal. In non-tropical climates, they are cultivated almost exclusively as container plants in greenhouses, employing constant bottom-watering techniques.

The economic and agricultural utility of this family is largely niche. Principal areas of interest include:

  • Use in the creation and maintenance of public and private paludariums.
  • Research into plant survival strategies in nutrient-poor, acidic wetland ecosystems.
  • Limited utilization in traditional medicine practices in their indigenous ranges.

The primary challenges in maintaining these plants involve protecting their natural habitats, which are increasingly threatened by drainage. In controlled environments, management focuses on preventing root rot caused by improper circulation or fungal pathogens, and controlling spider mite infestations that occur if atmospheric humidity levels drop below the threshold required for the species.
