Urartu wheat (Triticum urartu) is a wild diploid grass species in the family Poaceae. It is recognized as one of the fundamental ancestors of cultivated wheat, serving as the donor of the A genome for polyploid wheat species.
The natural distribution of this species is centered in the Near East, specifically within the Armenian Highlands, parts of Iran, Iraq, and Turkey, where it inhabits rocky slopes and dry grasslands.
This species is highly adapted to semi-arid environments, thriving in poor, stony soils where moisture levels are often unpredictable. Its physiological mechanisms allow it to tolerate extreme heat and drought.
Botanically, Triticum urartu is characterized by a fragile rachis that shatters easily upon maturation, an evolutionary trait that facilitates seed dispersal in the wild. The plants are relatively short with slender, upright stems.
Economically, this species is not used for grain production but is of critical importance in modern agronomy. Breeders utilize its wild germplasm to improve the stress tolerance and genetic diversity of high-yield commercial wheat varieties.
