Native to the Eurasian steppe belt, the plant is naturally adapted to regions with extreme temperature fluctuations and limited annual precipitation. In an agricultural context, it is highly valued for its resilience in challenging environmental conditions.
The crop thrives in well-drained, alkaline, or neutral soils, particularly those rich in carbonates. It requires full sun exposure and is highly sensitive to waterlogged conditions, which can lead to rapid decline in plant health and root rot.
Botanically, it is characterized by narrow, rolled leaves and striking, feathery awns that facilitate seed dispersal via wind. The deep root system allows the plant to stabilize loose soil surfaces effectively, making it an excellent candidate for land reclamation.
