These plants are native to the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Their natural range extends from the southeastern United States through Central America to Argentina, including the Caribbean islands. In the wild, they typically inhabit stagnant or slow-moving freshwater bodies, swamps, and wetlands where the substrate remains consistently saturated with water.

Botanically, Mayaca is characterized by thin, branched stems with spirally arranged, narrow leaves. The flowers are typically solitary and axillary, featuring three sepals and three petals, usually ranging in color from delicate pink to white. Their root systems are relatively undeveloped, which is typical for hydrophytes that absorb most of their required nutrients directly through their foliage.

In cultivation, these plants require conditions that mimic their natural tropical habitat. They thrive best in soft, slightly acidic water with high-intensity lighting and a consistent temperature range between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius. Providing a nutrient-rich substrate and supplemental carbon dioxide is often essential for successful growth, making them a common choice for high-tech aquarium setups.

The primary economic and practical use of Mayacaceae is ornamental. Due to their fine texture and vibrant green or reddish foliage, they are highly regarded in aquascaping.
