On an industrial scale, cultivation is most active in Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Japan. The crop prefers shallow, well-lit areas with sandy or muddy bottoms, which are effectively simulated in artificial ponds.

Botanically, Caulerpa is a complex system consisting of stolons (horizontal runners), rhizoids that anchor into the substrate, and assimilators that function like leaves. Its uniqueness lies in its high regenerative capacity: even a small fragment of a stolon can give rise to a new plant, which serves as the foundation for its propagation in commercial farming.

Environmental requirements include a stable water temperature between 25–30 degrees Celsius and high light intensity. In controlled environments, specialized nutrient solutions containing nitrogen and phosphorus are often added to boost biomass production. A critical aspect of cultivation is maintaining consistent salinity levels and ensuring the cleanliness of flow-through systems.

The economic use of Caulerpa is multifaceted: it is consumed as a delicacy known as "sea grapes" and utilized in pharmacology due to its high concentration of bioactive compounds, antioxidants, and polysaccharides. Furthermore, it serves as a valuable ingredient in animal feed and specialized aquaculture diets.
