The optimal planting depth for acorns is 5–8 centimeters depending on the soil texture. On heavy clay soils, surface mulching is recommended to prevent the formation of a soil crust, which can physically impede the emergence of young sprouts.

When spring sowing is practiced, it is essential to ensure high substrate moisture during the first weeks after germination. The use of specialized nursery trays for containerized seedlings significantly improves survival rates when they are eventually transplanted to permanent sites.

Optimal development requires an illuminated location, although in their juvenile stage, the plants can tolerate partial side shade. This characteristic allows the species to be effectively integrated into mixed forest plantations as a dominant component of the canopy.

Soil structure should possess high moisture-holding capacity, which is achieved by incorporating organic matter during site preparation. The optimal groundwater table for intensive growth should be at a depth of at least 1.5 to 2 meters below the surface level.

In regions characterized by an arid climate, agronomic practices require the establishment of an irrigation system. Supplementary mulching in the root zones helps maintain a stable root temperature and prevents moisture evaporation during periods of summer heat.

Main diseases and pests

The primary threat to young plants is pathogenic fungi of the Microsphaera genus, which cause powdery mildew on the foliage. Prevention involves the timely application of systemic fungicides at the first sign of leaf infection.

Insect pests, such as the oak leaf roller, can cause significant damage by consuming buds and young leaves during the active sap flow period. Regular crown monitoring allows for the rapid deployment of biological or chemical insecticide treatments.

The root systems are highly sensitive to rot caused by fungal pathogens in waterlogged soils. Maintaining crop rotation in nurseries and utilizing disease-free planting material remain the most effective methods for the preventive protection of oak plantations.

During the winter season, rodents pose a significant threat to young plantings by gnawing on the bark at the base of the stems. The installation of protective mesh or specialized stem guards helps minimize damage from wildlife during the critical early years of establishment.

Other notable threats include bacterial blight and bark necrosis, which often occur following mechanical injury to the tree trunk. Meticulous care and the use of disinfected pruning tools significantly reduce the risk of spreading infectious diseases throughout the plantation.
