Acanthocereus tepalcatepecanus is a rare species of cactus belonging to the Cactaceae family, endemic to the Mexican state of Michoacan. In the wild, it grows in the dry tropical forests of the Tepalcatepec River basin, which dictates its need for high temperatures and specific humidity levels.
Successful cultivation of this species requires a well-draining soil mix with a high proportion of mineral components, such as coarse sand, perlite, or gravel. The plant is extremely sensitive to water stagnation, so the substrate must be loose and permeable to air.
The culture is thermophilic and cannot tolerate the sub-zero temperatures typical of temperate climates. The optimal temperature range for growth is between 22 and 30 degrees Celsius, provided there is good lighting without the direct impact of scorching midday sun.
Watering should be moderate during the growing season and almost completely stopped during the winter dormant period, when the plant enters a state of stagnation. An important aspect of care is ensuring air circulation, which prevents the development of fungal infections in humid tropical environments.
This species is of primary interest to collectors of exotic cacti and botanical gardens. Its economic use is limited to ornamental gardening and scientific research aimed at conserving the genetic diversity of rare Mexican flora species.

The main threats to the development of this cactus are rots of various etiologies caused by excessive watering and poor substrate aeration.
Among pests, the mealybug and spider mite pose the greatest danger, often affecting the soft tissues of cacti in indoor spaces or greenhouses.
Disease prevention consists of regular inspection of the root collar and maintaining an optimal level of air humidity.
The use of specialized systemic fungicides is recommended at the first signs of damage by fungal pathogens.
Pest control is carried out using insecticides and acaricides, as well as by wiping stems with an alcohol solution in cases of light infestation.
