Tkemali is primarily propagated vegetatively by grafting onto cherry plum rootstocks or by cuttings. Seedlings are planted in the open ground in early spring before sap flow begins or in autumn, approximately one month before the onset of persistent frosts.

When establishing an orchard, choose well-lit areas protected from cold northern winds. An optimal planting scheme is 4 by 3 meters, which provides sufficient nutrition space for each tree and simplifies crown formation.

If growing from seeds, stratification is required for 3 to 4 months in a moist substrate at about +5 degrees Celsius. Seedlings are transplanted to their permanent location after one year, provided they have developed a strong root system.

A crucial step during planting is incorporating organic fertilizers into the pit, mixed with the fertile topsoil. The root collar of the seedling must remain 3–5 centimeters above the soil surface level after filling.

Immediately after planting, the tree basin must be watered thoroughly to improve root-to-soil contact. Mulching with peat or compost helps maintain soil moisture and suppresses weed growth in the initial years of the plant's life.

This crop belongs to the Rosaceae family and is a type of cherry plum (Prunus cerasifera). The plant shows high ecological plasticity, thriving in various soil types except for waterlogged or highly acidic environments.

Agricultural practices require annual pruning to lighten the crown and prevent density. Timely removal of dead or diseased branches improves air circulation and reduces the risk of fungal infections.

Yield

Self-rooted trees begin bearing fruit in the 3rd or 4th year after planting. As the tree matures, productivity increases, peaking between 7 and 10 years of age with proper crown maintenance.

The average yield of one mature tree ranges from 30 to 50 kilograms of fruit. Under intensive cultivation technologies, these figures can be significantly higher, especially in irrigated plantations.

Tkemali fruits are valued for their high content of organic acids, pectins, and vitamins. Their primary commercial use is processing: making the famous spicy sauce, jams, preserves, and compotes.

Regular irrigation during dry periods significantly influences fruit size and sugar content. Lack of moisture leads to fruit drop, which negatively affects the final volume of the harvested yield.

Harvesting is done in several stages as the fruits ripen, as they can continue to mature after picking. Timely harvesting prevents decay on the branches and facilitates longer storage at low temperatures.

Main diseases and pests

The most common diseases of Tkemali are shot-hole fungus (clasterosporium) and monilinia fruit rot. These infections spread rapidly during wet spring weather, affecting leaves, flowers, and young shoots.

Dangerous pests include the plum fruit moth, whose larvae damage the fruit pulp, making them unsuitable for storage. Trees are also frequently attacked by aphids, which suck sap from young foliage.

Control methods include preventive spraying with copper-based fungicides during the "green cone" growth stage. It is vital to perform sanitary cleaning of the orchard to remove fallen leaves, which harbor fungal spores.

Biological protection involves using pheromone traps to reduce the population of the plum moth. Insecticide application is strictly permitted only before and after flowering, adhering to recommended harvest intervals.

Harvesting

When stored in home refrigerators, fresh fruits retain their quality for 10–14 days. For long-term storage, the harvest is subjected to deep-freezing or large-scale industrial processing.

An important aspect is avoiding mechanical damage during picking, as skin cracking triggers mold growth. It is recommended to use containers with a soft bottom for collecting the produce.

After harvesting, it is advised to cool the fruits as quickly as possible to +2...+4 degrees Celsius. This slows down metabolic processes in the tissues and significantly extends shelf life without losing organoleptic properties.
