Myrmecophila thomsoniana is an epiphytic orchid species belonging to the Orchidaceae family, native to the Cayman Islands. This unique plant is well-known for its symbiotic relationship with ants, which inhabit its large, hollow, and often elongated pseudobulbs in their natural habitat.
To cultivate this species successfully, it requires very bright, direct light exposure. In indoor growing environments, providing intense supplemental lighting is essential, as insufficient light will result in stunted vegetative growth and a complete failure to produce blooms.
The plant thrives in warm tropical temperatures, preferring a range between 22 and 29 degrees Celsius throughout the year. It does not tolerate cold drafts or sudden temperature drops, which can lead to stress and leaf drop in this sensitive orchid variety.
High relative humidity, ideally between 60% and 80%, must be maintained alongside consistent air circulation to prevent fungal growth. Proper ventilation is vital for mimicking the natural breeze these plants receive in their native Caribbean environment.
The ideal potting substrate should be coarse and extremely well-draining, consisting primarily of large bark chunks, charcoal, and perlite. Because this plant is an epiphyte, it is highly recommended to grow it mounted on cork bark or in well-ventilated wooden baskets to ensure roots dry out between waterings.
Main diseases and pests
Common pests associated with Myrmecophila thomsoniana include scale insects and mealybugs, which tend to hide in the tight crevices between the leaves and pseudobulbs. Early detection and treatment with mild horticultural oils or specialized insecticides are necessary to keep the plant healthy.
Root rot and crown rot represent the most significant threats to this orchid, almost always caused by water stagnation or using an unsuitable, water-retentive medium. Maintaining strict irrigation discipline and ensuring the root zone has excellent aeration is the primary defense against these fatal diseases.
