The culture thrives in full sun exposure. Sunlight is a primary factor for the development of deep red or purple pigments in the leaves, which are the main agricultural and ornamental value of the plant.
Soil requirements are relatively specific: the plant demands well-drained, porous soils. It is highly intolerant of waterlogged conditions, which lead to rapid root decay. A neutral or slightly alkaline soil pH is optimal for nutrient uptake.
