Description

Growing requirements

Colquhounia coccinea is a striking flowering shrub that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. Native to the Himalayan region, including Nepal and Bhutan, this species is highly valued for its tubular, scarlet-to-orange flowers that bloom on graceful, arching branches throughout the late summer and autumn.

This shrub requires a sunny or partially shaded position to thrive, ideally protected from harsh, drying winds. It demands well-drained, fertile soil. In regions with heavy clay, amending the planting hole with organic matter and gravel is essential to prevent root rot.

Regarding climate, it is a tender perennial. While it can survive mild frosts, it is not fully hardy in colder temperate zones. In such areas, it should be treated as a container plant and brought into a greenhouse or frost-free shed during the winter months.

The irrigation management should be balanced; keep the soil consistently moist during the growth season but allow the surface to dry out slightly between waterings. During winter, reduce watering significantly to maintain the plant in a dormant, healthy state.

Pruning should be performed in early spring as the new growth buds begin to swell. Removing dead wood and thinning out old, unproductive stems encourages strong new growth and significantly improves the quantity and quality of flower production for the upcoming season.

Main diseases and pests

The plant is relatively hardy regarding pests, but it can occasionally be susceptible to fungal issues like powdery mildew if air circulation is poor. Ensuring that the shrub is spaced correctly and located in an airy position is the best preventative strategy against these conditions.

Pests like aphids and scale insects may sometimes infest the growing tips during warmer periods. Early detection through regular monitoring allows for simple manual removal or the application of horticultural soaps, which are generally sufficient to manage infestations without harsh chemicals.
