Its root system consists of thick, deep-reaching tubers that store energy, allowing the plant to survive harsh environmental conditions and rapid regrowth.

Like many milkweeds, it produces a milky latex sap when broken, which acts as a deterrent to herbivores and contains toxic glycosides.

Where it grows

This species thrives in dry, well-drained soils, often colonizing open fields, roadsides, and meadows where competition from other vegetation is minimal.
