Description
Mode of action
The Spodoptera exigua nuclear polyhedrosis virus (SeNPV) is a highly specific biological insecticide belonging to the baculovirus family. The active component consists of virions embedded in a crystalline protein matrix called a polyhedron.
When larvae ingest treated plant material, the alkaline environment of the insect's midgut dissolves the polyhedral protein coat, releasing the infectious viral particles.
Once released, the virus infects the epithelial cells of the gut and rapidly replicates throughout the host's body, eventually leading to the total breakdown of internal tissues.
The infected larva stops feeding shortly after ingestion, which prevents immediate crop damage, and eventually dies as the virus spreads throughout its entire body.
A unique feature of this agent is its self-sustaining nature; as the host decomposes, it releases millions of new viral particles into the environment, promoting further natural spread.
