Mode of action

Reynoutria sachalinensis extract, also known as giant knotweed extract, functions as a highly effective biological inducer of Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) in plants. It does not act as a direct toxicant to pathogens but rather primes the plant's natural immune system.

Upon application, the extract signals the plant to produce specific pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins and phytoalexins. This biological response thickens cell walls and prepares the plant to defend against fungal attacks before they cause significant damage.

The process involves the stimulation of enzymes, such as peroxidases, which facilitate the lignification of plant tissue. This creates a robust physical barrier that prevents fungal spores from successfully colonizing the plant tissue.

Unlike traditional chemical fungicides, this natural extract provides long-term protection by maintaining the plant in a state of enhanced alertness against various biotic stresses.

As a biological tool, it is completely non-toxic to non-target organisms and does not promote the development of resistance in harmful pathogens, making it ideal for sustainable agricultural practices.

What it targets

The extract is primarily used to control powdery mildew diseases (*Erysiphe*, *Podosphaera*, *Sphaerotheca* spp.) in a wide range of fruit, vegetable, and ornamental crops.

It is widely utilized in viticulture to suppress grape powdery mildew (oidium) and downy mildew, as well as in berry production to mitigate grey mold (*Botrytis cinerea*).

The product provides protection against various leaf spot diseases by boosting the host plant's ability to limit the spread of lesions.

It is particularly effective in greenhouse environments where high humidity and temperature often create ideal conditions for rapid fungal development.

Rates and timing

The efficacy of this extract is strictly dependent on preventive application. It is not designed for curative use once an infection has already become systemic.

Application rates generally range from 0.5 to 2.0 liters per hectare, depending on the specific formulation and the severity of the pressure in the field.

The first application should occur during early vegetative growth or at the onset of flowering, before the visual appearance of any disease symptoms.

For consistent protection, regular spray intervals of 7 to 14 days are recommended throughout the period of high risk for the target disease.

Effective application requires thorough and uniform coverage of the plant canopy to ensure that all parts of the foliage are sufficiently exposed to the extract.

Restrictions

While compatible with many biological and synthetic pesticides, it is recommended to perform a jar test when mixing with other chemicals to avoid physical incompatibility.

Application should be avoided during heavy rain, as washing off the product reduces its effectiveness, unless specialized spray adjuvants are used to improve retention.

The extract is not a substitute for standard good agricultural practices such as proper pruning, ventilation in greenhouses, and the removal of infected debris.

There is virtually no pre-harvest interval (PHI) required due to its biological nature, allowing for application close to the time of harvest without risk of residue.

Product stability is sensitive to extreme storage temperatures, and it should be stored in a cool, dry place to maintain its natural biological activity over time.
