By triggering the production of phytoalexins, these compounds enhance the plant's immune response, making it more resilient against fungal and oomycete attacks.

Once applied, the substance is translocated through both the xylem and phloem, which ensures that both the canopy and the roots receive protection from the fungicide.

These compounds are considered an essential tool in integrated pest management because they help prevent the development of resistant fungal strains.

What it targets

Potassium phosphonates are specifically effective against pathogens in the class Oomycetes, which are responsible for some of the most destructive agricultural diseases.

The target range includes various blights, downy mildews, and root rot pathogens that affect both vegetable and perennial crops.

Common applications are found in potato, tomato, and onion production, as well as in vineyard maintenance for grape health.

  • Late blight (Phytophthora) in potatoes and tomatoes.
  • Downy mildew in cucumbers and onions.
  • Grapevine downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola).
  • Root and crown rot complexes in fruit trees.

Rates and timing

Application rates typically range from 2 to 5 liters per hectare depending on the severity of the infection and the crop growth stage.

The timing of application is crucial; the best results are achieved through prophylactic treatments before the onset of visible symptoms.

Depending on environmental conditions and disease pressure, 2 to 4 applications per season are generally recommended with 10 to 14-day intervals.

Adequate spray coverage is necessary to ensure the active ingredient is absorbed efficiently by the leaf tissue for systemic movement.

Farmers should monitor local disease modeling reports to optimize the timing and frequency of applications throughout the growing cycle.

Restrictions

Avoid tank mixing with products containing copper or certain highly concentrated nutrient solutions to prevent potential chemical incompatibility or phytotoxicity.

Treatments should be avoided during periods of extreme heat or drought stress, as this may limit the plant's ability to absorb and translocate the fungicide.

Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn during preparation and application to avoid any direct skin or eye contact with the concentrated chemicals.
