Description
Mode of action
Onion oil belongs to the group of plant-derived essential oils used in crop protection as natural insecticides and repellents. Their action is based on volatile sulfur-containing compounds, such as dipropyl disulfide, which disorient insect pests in the environment.
Products based on onion oil do not kill insects instantly but act on their chemoreceptors, suppressing their ability to locate host plants by smell. As a result, pests stop laying eggs on treated surfaces and avoid colonizing the area.
An important aspect is that the active substance has both contact and fumigation effects. It evaporates rapidly, creating a protective barrier around the plant that is unpleasant for many types of phytophagous insects while remaining safe for warm-blooded animals.
The mechanism of action also involves the disruption of metabolic processes during sensitive stages of pest development. Upon direct contact with the oil, the insect's external integument can be damaged, leading to mortality or a significant reduction in viability.
Unlike synthetic pesticides, onion oil does not cause rapid resistance development in insects. This makes it an effective tool for integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, allowing it to be rotated with other biological products.
What it targets
Onion oil is most effective against sucking and chewing insects, especially those that rely on plant odors to locate their hosts. Primary targets include members of the Diptera order, particularly the onion fly.
The product also shows activity against various aphid species that damage vegetable crops. The oil effectively repels the carrot fly, preventing damage to root crops by larvae, and reduces populations of thrips on ornamental and field crops.
Due to its antiseptic properties, onion oil can limit the spread of certain fungal pathogens on leaf surfaces. It is used to prevent secondary infections that develop on plant tissues already damaged by insects.
The application of this product is appropriate in orchards and vegetable gardens, where preserving natural enemies and beneficial pollinators is important. Onion oil exhibits pronounced selectivity, primarily affecting specific pest species.
The range of pests may also include spider mites in greenhouse vegetable production, where high concentrations of volatile compounds create unfavorable conditions for their reproduction and feeding on the crop.
Rates and timing
Application rates for onion oil depend significantly on the concentration of the active ingredient in the commercial formulation. Usually, aqueous emulsions are used, prepared immediately before spraying to prevent rapid evaporation of volatile fractions.
The timing of applications is linked to periods of active pest flight and the phenological stages of the protected crop. The frequency of spraying is typically every 7–10 days, due to the high volatility of the oil components.
A crucial condition for effectiveness is thorough coverage of the leaf surface with the working solution. To improve adhesion and prolong the effect, special adjuvants that reduce surface tension are often added to the mixture.
The optimal time for application is early morning or evening to avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures, which accelerate the breakdown of active ingredients. Applications should not be performed during rainy weather, as this reduces the concentration of the product.
When used in greenhouses, application rates may be adjusted downward due to the accumulation of volatile substances in the enclosed space, which provides a longer-lasting protective effect.
Restrictions
Onion oil is a substance with a low level of toxicity, but it requires standard safety precautions when handling concentrated essential oils. Avoid direct contact of the product with the skin and mucous membranes.
The main limitation is the instability of the active ingredients in the external environment. Rapid evaporation limits the duration of the protective action, necessitating frequent re-applications, which increases the total cost of protection.
There is a risk of phytotoxicity if recommended concentrations are exceeded, especially on young or weakened plants. It is always recommended to conduct a small-scale test before applying the product to a larger area.
When storing products based on onion oil, it is necessary to prevent exposure to direct sunlight and ensure airtight packaging. Failure to do so results in the oxidation of active components and the loss of insecticidal properties.
It is not recommended to mix onion oil with highly alkaline pesticides, as this can lead to the chemical degradation of the oil components and reduce the overall effectiveness of the tank mixture.
